PRESS RELEASE
April 13, 2008
On the April 9, 2008 broadcast of CNN's "Situation Room", when asked to comment on the United States' relationship with China, commentator Jack Cafferty responded:
"Well, I don't know if China is any different, but our relationship with China is certainly different. We're in hock to the Chinese up to our eyeballs because of the war in Iraq, for one thing. They're holding hundreds of billions of dollars worth of our paper. We also are running hundred of billions of dollars worth of trade deficits with them, as we continue to import their junk with the lead paint on them and the poisoned pet food and export, you know, jobs to places where you can pay workers a dollar a month to turn out the stuff that we're buying from Wal-Mart. So I think our relationship with China has certainly changed. I think they're basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they've been for the last 50 years".
Grace Meng, President of the Queens Chinese Women's Association stated, "CNN has been the host of multiple presidential debates and has various daily programs conveying intelligent and responsible comments regarding presidential politics to Americans throughout the nation, of which Chinese-Americans are part of their audience."
She further said, "Our Chinese-American community calls on CNN, in particularly Jack Cafferty, to formerly apologize for his hurtful comments. I also call on the 3 presidential candidates – Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John McCain to denounce these comments. As all 3 candidates claim to be running campaigns for a changed and unified America, they should know that many of the people who are hurt by these comments are also an integral part of this changed and unified America and to stand up for ALL Americans."
