I caught a blog from one Jeremiah Dunne, from CHINA DESK, entitled "Taelspin: The Spirit of May 4th." This is the blog site of Susan Brownell, an academic from the U.S. now filing her blogs from Beijing, with a bunch of her mostly White Euro expats (hardly any Chinese whatsoever in her blogsite) from their "privileged" perch; and this American woman academic is supposed to be in China; she might as well be in Boston, Massachusetts.
I occasionaly find Ms. Brownell's blogsite helpful because it is from a Westerner's point of view and through those set of lenses that I sometimes want to see where she and her fellow expats, mostly Westerners and Euros ( I wonder why?) contibuting their blogs are coming from, calluses, biases, prejudices, blinders and all. Spaghetti or "White Bread" blogs, I term them.
But I want you to read Mr. Dunne's "think piece" about May 4th, and tell me what you think. For me, he is a Jian You 贱友 - bad friend. And his essay about May 4th is completely warped and perverted as he attempted to bring forth its history to the present, complete with quote from Lu Xun:

Mr. Dunne posits his read of May 4th's history correctly, but he came out completely wrong and full of hubris at the end when he completely ignored how the WEST had denigrated, insulated, and disrespected China in the runoff to the Beijing Olympics. Completely ignoraing London, Paris, and San Francisco and the harassment of the torch relay runners in those three cities, Mr. Dunne chose to ignore and wrote :
about the allged Chinese overseas in support of the torch in their "physical violence in South Korea, the mobbing and intimidation of protesters in Australia, and alleged death threats against a Duke University co-ed." Talk about bias and the lop-sided spin in his perverted mind from his privileged perch as a so-called "China expert" or Sinophile. Jian You 贱友!
For me, Mr. exemplifies the hubris, arrogance, and cultural "blinders" that many Westerners hold when they visit, live, or study in China, Jian You 贱友 ...... These are China's Western so-called "friends" who can't stop their neo-imperialist, neo-colonilal "piling" and display their "white man's" "hambug;" and in their prejudicial "europeanized" view of the world, they assume that living from their exalted and privileged position as "Westerners" in China, with their better living conditions, they can take their "white supremacist" uppity position and ram it through onto the Chinese people, whether it is about "human rights," protests, or intellectual ideas. Hubris. Arrogance. Rubbish.
Get off your high horse. Dude. You may be in China, but your "China" is obviously saddled by your own "hubris" as Sahib and Massah.
自己照照镜子 Zi Ji Zhao ZHao Jing Zi . Look at yourself in the mirror and look at your own putried society back home in the WEST -- intellectually sterile, drugged, afflicted with the crisis of affluenza.
Your Hollywood is mired in banality, cultural vapidness, and vulgarity.
Your American campuses are now longer citadels of learning but of druggies, potheads, bongheads, sexual predators, and youthful hoolingans obsessed with hyperstimulation, hyperconsumerism, and hyperhedonism. The lifestyle of a society crumbling from within. Mondo Bizzaro. Look at your Western icons --- your Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohans, Paris Hiltons.... Hollywood banality. Thank goodness China's sixth and seventh generation of filmmakers are not the "apes" that try to immitate and worship the WEST. Bai Ren Pi Hao Xiang 白人屁好香.
Yes, China's glass is "half-full;" but the Chinese youths know where they are going; and after all this racist carping, China bashing, demonization, and lynching from the WEST, accompanying the Olympics torch through the streets of London, Paris, San Francisco, we know that the WEST is extremely jealous and stridently upset at China's resurgence at the world stage as a civilizational power.
Eat your heart out. Dude.

Take care of your own sordid mess back in the AMERICA, or in the rest of EUROPE, before you stick your head into a society where you hold a white "privileged" position as an "expat" and try to arrogantly look down at the Chinese people as a "white massah" and "white Sahib."
Those days are now eroding. China's "colonial mentality" among its youths will be exorcised.
