I don't understand the gweillos at all.
Here they are in China, one of the world's oldest civilizations, with 5,000 years of history, and in a city with so much to offer.... and here they land in Beijing. And they remain narrow-minded, closed, and insulated.
They may have an open society, but their minds and hearts are too constricted, too narrow-minded, and downright incapable of transcending beyond their cultural blinders.
Consider the following piece from Michael Purdy, reporter from the San Jose Mercury News, in his pursuit of a sports bar in Beijing.... as if this is the only thing which will draw him to Beijing.
I hope China's youths learn from America's mistakes and the bad habits of Americans. Drinking and Dope. And yes, vulgarity, insolence, and narrow-mindedness.
We are in the world of globalization, the internet, and cyberspace. But many in the West, especially America, remain parochial, insular, and close-minded.
